From the moment we arrived at Colehayes, we both had a feeling it was the place we wanted to get married. We were met by nothing but friendly and enthusiastic people; Rebecca, Bill and Ellice were so helpful and full of ideas; it really helped us to overcome our initial feelings of being daunted, and to get excited about our day. One of the first things we realised was how much flexibility we would have at Colehayes, which would be unmatched anywhere else.

We visited Colehayes 4 or 5 times as the wedding approached, and each time Rebecca made time for us without fail. She clearly understands how important the day is to all couples; she was unfailingly enthusiastic and genuinely cared about ensuring that our day was right for us. During the final weeks of preparation, I was emailing Ellice on a daily basis, and she helped not only with my questions, but also with putting my mind at ease that everything would come together and be ok on the day. She was right!

We hired Kathy, the Head Cook, and two other Colehayes Staff to help with the catering on the day. Kathy was lovely, and did a sterling job with the food. She stayed on afterwards and had one or two (or three or four!) drinks and joined in the party, which was brilliant.

We also hired Ray and Stuart from Inn2u to run a mobile bar on Saturday night. They set up at the far end of the bar room, which worked really well and somehow made the room feel bigger. They set up on Friday night, then opened the bar on Sat pm and came again on Sunday am to take the bar away. The two of them stayed and partied with us all night long – keeping the bar open into the early hours. They are a great pair and we couldn’t recommend them any more highly.

We also hired the cottage which was perfect for family with young children to stay in over the weekend. I got ready in the cottage on Saturday morning, which meant I was well hidden from the groom and any last minute stresses! I had my hair and make up done there, by Sarah from Gershwins in Newton Abbot. We arranged it so that some of the bridesmaids had their hair done at the salon, and others (those with babies) had their hair done at the venue. Gershwins were helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble.

We met our photographer in a pub in North Devon where we live. He doesn’t specialize in wedding photography so offered us a good rate! In the evening he set up a mini studio in the lecture hall at the end of the corridor, and took formal professional photos of anyone who wanted them. He then set up a link on his website where people could log on and buy individual photos if they wished. Kev took absolutely fantastic photos of our day – he was chilled, relaxed and funny, and a superb photographer.

We had a winter wedding, and one of our concerns was the cold. We lit the wood burner in the reception room on Friday night and Saturday day time. Late on Friday night our guests were actually complaining that they were too hot! As long as the fires were lit, we had no trouble with the cold at all (we didn’t light the fire in the main hall as it gets smoky).

Colehayes Park made our wedding. The venue is stunning beyond words, but more than that, Rebecca and Ellice’s approach is friendly, flexible and exactly what we were after. They have ideas and contacts if you want them, but if you don’t – no worries. They will help as little or as much as you like, and you are never obliged to do anything you don’t want to do. The bedrooms are beautifully looked after; clean and spacious with some great views, and the bathrooms and kitchens are functional and clean. We got married in the main hall, by a registrar from Teignbridge District Council. We had 75 people at our service – which was about as many as we would have liked to try and fit in the hall! We had a sit down meal in the afternoon and seated 75 adults (including 3 toddlers in highchairs and one baby in a pram) comfortably. In the evening, we had 120 guests and a 5 piece caleigh band. The layout between the reception room, bar and main hall meant there was something for everyone, and the kids could run around too! We even used the Wi Fi connection during the ceremony and were able to set up Skype with Dan’s Uncle in France and Granddad in Australia, so all the family truly were there!

If you’re after a beautiful venue, with no obligations and a cool and helpful team to give you the wedding of your dreams, this is the place to go. Come rain or shine, you will have the most incredible day of your life.
